Who is charging, and why it matters

Staff charging

Long dwell times, usually a full working day. Slower AC charging across more bays is can be a suitable option.

Customer charging

Short dwell, and often an amenity that draws people in. Faster charging matters more, and so does access control.

Fleet charging

Predictable and schedulable overnight. Ideal for load management, because you control when it happens.

AC or DC

AC charging is what most sites need. It is far cheaper per bay, the equipment is simpler, and where vehicles sit for hours it delivers more than enough. DC fast charging costs substantially more per bay, draws very heavily, and frequently requires supply upgrades. It earns its place where dwell time is genuinely short.

The common mistake is specifying DC for a car park where cars sit for eight hours. The money is far better spent on more AC bays.

Load management across bays

This is the part that makes multi-bay charging affordable. Without it, the supply has to be sized for every charger running at full output simultaneously, which is both expensive and something that rarely happens.

Dynamic load management monitors the whole site and shares available capacity between active chargers, backing off when the building draws heavily and ramping up overnight. It lets a site install considerably more bays than its spare capacity would otherwise allow.

  • Site supply assessment, to establish what spare capacity actually exists.
  • Dynamic load management across all bays, sharing capacity rather than reserving it.
  • Cable routing and civil work for car park installations, including trenching where needed.
  • Access control, so chargers are available to the people you intend.
  • Billing and usage reporting, whether for cost recovery, fringe benefits records or charging customers.
  • Conduit and capacity for future bays, which costs very little now and a great deal later.

Install for later, not just now. The civil work is the expensive part. Running spare conduit and sizing the supply for future bays while the trench is already open is can be more practical than digging the car park up twice.

Charging on your own generation

A workplace car park full of cars during daylight is an almost perfect match for commercial solar. Vehicles charge on generation you would otherwise export at a low tariff, which improves the return on both investments at once.

Good to know

Your questions, answered.

How many chargers can our site support?

More than you would think, with load management. Without it, you are limited by spare capacity. We assess the supply first.

Do we need a supply upgrade?

Often not for AC charging with load management. DC fast charging frequently does. See electrical infrastructure upgrades.

Can we charge users or recover costs?

Yes. Chargers can be configured with access control and usage reporting for billing or internal cost recovery.

Should we install now or wait?

Even if you are not ready for chargers, running conduit and sizing the supply during other works is cheap insurance.
