LED upgrades
Swapping halogen downlights for LED is the single most cost-effective lighting job in most homes. Halogens typically draw around 50 watts each and run hot enough to be a genuine fire risk where insulation has been pushed against them. A comparable LED draws around 5 to 9 watts and produces less heat.
In a house with thirty downlights on for four hours a night, that difference is substantial over a year, and it compounds if you are trying to run the house on your own solar.
Getting the light right
Brightness is not the only thing that matters. Two numbers decide whether a room feels right.
- Colour temperature, measured in kelvin. Around 2700K to 3000K is warm and suits living areas and bedrooms. 4000K is neutral and suits kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. Cooler than that starts to feel clinical at home.
- Beam angle and placement. Evenly spaced downlights light a floor, not a room. Aiming light at walls and joinery is what makes a space feel finished.
- Dimming. Not every LED dims well, and not every dimmer suits every driver. Mismatched pairs are the usual cause of flicker and buzzing.
What we install
Security and motion lighting
Sensor floodlights at entries, side access and the back yard, aimed so they light the approach rather than the neighbours.
Exterior and landscape
Entry, path, deck and garden lighting, weatherproofed properly for the coastal environment.
Strip and feature lighting
Under-bench, joinery, stair and shelf lighting, with the driver somewhere accessible for when it eventually needs replacing.
Emergency lighting
Where it is required, installed and maintained to the relevant standard.
A note on coastal installations. Salt air is hard on exterior fittings. Cheap outdoor lights near the coast tend to fail within a couple of seasons, so it is worth specifying fittings rated for the environment rather than the cheapest option on the shelf.
Good to know
Your questions, answered.
Can you replace halogen downlights without damaging the ceiling?
In most cases yes, because LED fittings are made in sizes that match common halogen cut-outs. Where the cut-out does not match we use a plate rather than cutting the ceiling about.
Why do my LED lights flicker when dimmed?
A mismatch between the dimmer and LED driver is one possible cause. We check the fittings, controls and wiring to identify the issue. It is usually fixed by changing the dimmer to one suited to the fitting.
Can you add lighting without rewiring?
Often yes, depending on ceiling access and the existing circuit. We will tell you what is possible after a look.
Do you do lighting design, or just installation?
Both. If you tell us how you use the room we will lay the lighting out rather than just replacing what is there.
