It starts with your bill, not your roof

The most important number on your electricity bill is not the dollar figure, it is the daily usage in kilowatt hours and how it is split between peak and off-peak. That tells us whether you are a household that is out all day and uses power at night, or one with someone home running air conditioning through the afternoon.

Those two households need very different systems. The first benefits enormously from battery storage and comparatively little from a huge array. The second can self-consume most of what it generates and may not need a battery immediately. Getting this wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake in residential solar.

Designing around the roof

  • Orientation. North-facing gives the highest total yield. East and west split generation towards morning and afternoon, which often suits household usage better than a single north array.
  • Pitch and roof type. Tile, tin and klip-lok all need different mounting, and the pitch affects both output and how the panels sit.
  • Shading. Trees, chimneys, aerials and neighbouring buildings. We look at shading across the day and across the seasons, not just at the moment we visit.
  • Usable area. Fire setbacks, penetrations, skylights and existing solar all reduce the area available.
  • Structure. The roof has to be sound enough to take the array, and we check it rather than assuming.

The hardware

We support Jinko and Canadian Solar panels, with GoodWe, Sigenergy or Sungrow inverter and battery systems. Product and performance warranties vary by model. Your quote identifies the equipment and the applicable manufacturer terms.

We only fit equipment we would put on our own homes. That is a genuine constraint on what we quote, and it is the main reason we are not the cheapest name on your list.

What installation day looks like

  1. Set up and safetyRoof access and fall protection go in first. We protect the areas we work through and keep the site tidy.
  2. Mounting and panelsRails are fixed to the roof structure and flashed properly, then panels are mounted and strung.
  3. Inverter and switchboardThe inverter goes in, and we run the solar circuit into your switchboard with its own protection. If the board needs upgrading we will have told you before the day.
  4. Test, commission and hand overFull electrical testing, then we set up monitoring and walk you through the app so you can see what the system is doing.

Most residential installs are finished in a single day. Systems that also need a switchboard upgrade occasionally run into a second.

The installed price depends on the equipment, access and any enabling electrical work. Your quote identifies the proposed models, installation scope and any eligible discounts.

Good to know

Your questions, answered.

How big a system do I need?

It depends on your usage and your roof, not on a standard size. Our packages run from 6.6kW to 13kW, and the free assessment is what tells us which end of that range suits you.

Should I add a battery now or later?

If your usage is mostly in the evening, a battery does more for your bill than extra panels. With the current rebate the maths has shifted considerably in favour of doing it now. See battery storage.

What happens to the power I do not use?

It is exported to the grid and you receive a feed-in tariff, which is typically far lower than what you pay to buy power back. That gap is the whole argument for storing it instead.

What warranty do I get?
