When a rewire makes sense
Older Queensland homes frequently still have original wiring, and some of it is well past its service life. The tell-tale signs are cloth or rubber insulated cable, no earth on the lighting circuits, a board full of ceramic fuses, and power points that are loose or discoloured.
A rewire is also the natural moment to fix everything else at once, because the walls and ceilings are already open. That is when adding circuits, data cabling and proper lighting costs a fraction of what it would later.
Partial or full
Partial rewire
Replacing the circuits that need it, usually the oldest runs or a section of the house being renovated, while keeping sound existing wiring in place.
Full rewire
Every circuit replaced back to a new board. Disruptive, but it resets the whole house and is often the right call on a major renovation.
Working alongside your builder
We are used to working to a program with other trades. The rough-in has to happen at the right point between frame and lining, and the fit-off has to happen once the painters are done. Missing either window is what causes delays, so we plan our visits around the build schedule rather than our own.
Plan for what comes later
While the walls are open, it costs very little to run a conduit for a future EV charger or to pull in an extra circuit for an air conditioner. Retrofitting either one afterwards costs considerably more. We will talk through EV charging, air conditioning and solar at planning stage so the house is ready for them.
A renovation is also the right time to deal with the switchboard and to bring smoke alarms up to the current Queensland requirements, which apply when you renovate.
Good to know
Your questions, answered.
Do I need to move out during a rewire?
For a full rewire in an occupied house, often yes, at least for part of it. A partial rewire can usually be staged so you keep power to the rooms you are living in.
Can you work from the builder’s plans?
Yes. Send them through and we will mark up the electrical layout and quote from it.
Will I need to repair walls afterwards?
Some patching is normal, and we route cables to minimise it. On a renovation the patching usually falls inside work that was happening anyway.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can. The rough-in date is driven by the build program, and we would rather hold a slot than rush it.
