When should you have your switchboard assessed?

Licensed electrician working on a switchboard

An electrical upgrade often starts at the switchboard. Age, recurring faults and new equipment are good reasons to have a licensed electrician assess the board and the circuits it supplies.

Look for a reason to investigate

Repeated tripping, visible deterioration or a proposal to add a substantial new load all deserve attention. A board that looks tidy is not automatically suitable for new work.

Do not remove covers or touch components to inspect a board. If there is smoke, arcing or an immediate danger, keep clear and contact emergency services as appropriate.

Know the difference in protection

Circuit breakers protect against overloads and short circuits. Safety switches detect leakage current and reduce the risk of electric shock. An RCBO combines both functions.

An electrician can identify the devices fitted, test them and assess the requirements for the existing installation and proposed work.

Consider the next few years

New equipment can change the load on your supply. It is useful to discuss future plans while the board is being assessed.

  • Solar or a home battery
  • An EV charger
  • Air conditioning or electric hot water
  • A renovation, extension or new appliance
  • Additional circuits or an outbuilding

Ask what the quote includes

A switchboard quote should explain the proposed scope, any related wiring work, testing and likely power interruption. Metering or supply work may need separate coordination.

Queensland guidance recommends testing safety switches every three months using the test button. Follow the device instructions and call an electrician if a test fails or a switch will not reset. Read the Electrical Safety Office guidance.
